Condos are relatively new in Charlottetown, PEI and The ‘Y’ Loft Condos truly break the typical mold. We have demonstrated our ‘green’ commitment by purchasing wind energy to operate the innovative PEI condo building. Residents are also encouraged to go ‘green’ and utilize wind power from Maritime Electric for their own Y loft-condo. Future investment in solar collectors -and other eco-friendly initiatives- will be on-going in order to maintain an emphasis on responsible living in our environmentally vulnerable New Millennium.
The ‘Y’ is concerned with the environment as well as the health and well-being of its residents. Recycling an existing PEI structure is the environmentally friendly thing to do. Not only do we protect the environment by avoiding the production and transport of NEW building materials, we avoid clogging already congested PEI landfills with old bricks and mortar. The convenience of living and working in Charlottetown’s downtown core is by far one of the most helpful methods to reduce carbon emissions, simply by minimizing our reliance on the automobile.
The ‘Y’ is heated by the Charlottetown District Heating System, which produces energy by burning waste and woodchips, both renewable resources. All new construction at the PEI landmark features high levels of energy efficiency and low VOC levels. It’s a healthy complex with loads of character- That’s ‘Y’!
The ‘sick building syndrome’ has plagued many condo developments throughout the world due to the increasing use of toxic materials in modern construction. The ‘Y’ Loft-Condos in Charlottetown, PEI are a healthy example of design and construction, thanks to the simple building materials utilized at its inception, such as concrete, glass, steel, and wood. Finishes used in the building’s infancy have long ago emitted any potentially harmful VOC’s and paints used today are water-based acrylics. We hope residents will adopt ‘green’ methods and continue the ‘Y’ example of environmental consciousness.
